The History of the New Austin Central Library
The New Austin Central Library replaced the old Faulk Central Library in 2017.
Construction for the new library began back in the spring of 2013. The building itself was designed to be a 6-story building that overlooked the popular sites of Shoal Creek and Lady Bird Lake. As part of the city’s enormous redevelopment of the area in and around the Seaholm Power Plant, it was completed and opened to the public in the fall of 2017.
Now, the library is operating at full capacity and is a popular location for both residents and visitors alike.

The New Austin Central Library is home to numerous attractions. Some of the notable locations within the building include a living rooftop garden with a diverse array of wildlife, countless reading porches, a reading room in the interior, enormous event spaces both inside and outside of the building, a bicycle corral, a gift shop, a beautiful art gallery, and even a cafe.
The New Austin Central Library was even awarded a LEED Platinum status due to its commitment to sustainability. This rating is granted to homes, buildings, and communities that have been designed to operate for improved environmental health and sustainability. The platinum level is the highest possible status that a building can receive.
The library is also home to a wide variety of technological gadgets that visitors can explore, nicknamed the technology petting zoo. Its home is on the fifth floor at the top of Harry-Potter style stairs where individuals and families can try a Google Home, a large-scale 3D printer, and even Phillips Hue smart lights.
