Something pretty cool came across our social media the other day. It’s video of the “Goddess of Liberty” statue being added to the top of the Capitol Building. After removing the old statue, which was dilapidated, the new statue was added in 1986.
The new statue, made of Alcoa aluminum, was hoisted in place by the National Guard. We think that’s pretty cool!
Apparently, it was a windy day and dual rotor helicopter wasn’t really designed for building projects, so they got a specialized building helicopter (called a “sky crane”) from the Mississippi National Guard that allowed the statue to be installed without a hitch. The footage of the first attempt is pretty nuts. Check it out below:
